Lines of Triticum aestivum Chinese Spring (2n = 6x = 42) which were ditelocentric or doubly ditelocentric, in turn, for the 14 chromosomes of the A and B genomes were pollinated by Triticum urartu (2n = 14). The behaviour of the marked telocentric chromosomes was scored in the 14 distinct hybrids obtained from these pollinations. In 6 of the hybrids in which different A genome chromosomes were marked by telocentrics there were from 50 to 80% of the pollen mother cells in which the telocentrics were paired. In the seven hybrids in which different B genome chromosomes were marked the telocentrics were never paired. It was concluded that the genome of T. urartu matched very closely the A genome of hexaploid wheat and that it did not correspond, as had been proposed by Johnson, to the B genome. The pairing behaviour of the 14 T. aestivum × T. urartu hybrids was compared with earlier results obtained from hybrids between T. aestivum and T. boeoticum. It was proposed that the higher trivalent frequencies seen in the T. boeoticum hybrids could be due to homoeologous pairing and that the genotype of T. boeoticum has the capacity partly to suppress the activity of the Ph locus of chromosome 5B of wheat, as a result of which homoeologous pairing is normally prevented.

Plants of Triticum aestivum (2n = 6x = 42) ditelocentric 5BL were treated with EMS in order to produce mutations in the 5B system by which meiotic pairing between homoeologous chromosomes is normally prevented. To check for the occurrence of mutation T. aestivum ditelo-5BL plants were pollinated with rye (Secale cereale 2n = 14) and meiosis was examined in the resulting hybrids.
Wheat-rye hybrids were scored for the presence of mutants when the wheat parents were either the EMS-treated wheat plants, or their selfed derivatives, or their progenies obtained after pollination with untreated euploid individuals.
Mutants were detected by each of these procedures and mutant gametes were produced by the treated ditelocentric plants with frequencies between 1·5 and 2·5%, but there were differences between the mutants in the extent to which homoeologous pairing occurred in the derived wheat-rye hybrids. The differences may have resulted from the occurrence of mutation at different loci or to different extents at the same locus.
Two mutants, Mutant 10/13 and Mutant 61, were fixed in the homozygous condition. Mutant 10/13 was made homozygous both in the 5BL ditelocentric and in the euploid conditions but these genotypes regularly formed 21 bivalents at meiosis, and there was no indication of homoeologous pairing although the mutant 10/13 gave rise to homoeologous pairing in wheat-rye hybrids.

1. Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare variety Chinese Spring (2n = 6x = 42) is susceptible to yellow rust caused by Puccinia striiformis while the wild annual grass Aegilops comosa (2n = 14) is resistant to all the physiologic races for which it has been tested.
2. By a backcrossing programme initiated from Chinese Spring × Ae. comosa hybrids, using Chinese Spring as the recurrent parent, a line was isolated with a single chromosome of Ae. comosa, determining rust resistance, added to the full complement of Chinese Spring.
3. The alien chromosome substituted with good genetic compensation only for the chromosomes of homoeologous group 2 of Chinese Spring. This demonstrated that the chromosome determining rust resistance is in homoeologous group 2. It was designated 2M since Ae. comosa has the M genome.
4. In order to induce recombination between 2M and its wheat homoeologues, hybrids were made using Ae. speltoides which has the capacity to suppress the activity of chromosome 5B that normally prevents homoeologous synapsis. A backcrossing programme, using Chinese Spring as the recurrent parent, was reinitiated from the 29-chromosome hybrids carrying chromosome 2M and the haploid complements of Chinese Spring and Ae. speltoides.
5. Selection was practised for rust resistance and ultimately a resistant plant with 42 chromosomes, that formed 21 bivalents at meiosis, was isolated. This plant was heterozygous for a dominant rust resistance allele (Yr8) derived from Ae. comosa. Homozygotes were isolated in its progeny and in this way the rust resistant breeder's variety, Compair, was established.
6. Compair differs from Chinese Spring in its yellow rust resistance which was shown to be determined by a chromosome corresponding to 2D of Chinese Spring. This chromosome of Compair has the short arm, the centromere and a proximal segment of the long arm of chromosome 2M and a distal segment of the right arm of chromosome 2D. The modified chromosome, which is designated 2M/D, arose by homoeologous recombination in the Ae. speltoides hybrid or in the immediately succeeding backcross generations. Chromosome 2M/D carries the Yr8 gene in the proximal segment of the long arm derived from chromosome 2M.
7. In hybrids between Compair and standard wheat varieties, chromosome 2M/D pairs regularly with chromosome 2D so that regular segregation of Yr8 can be expected and Compair treated like any other parental variety in wheat hybridization programmes.
8. This work illustrates the way that homoeologous recombination can be induced and exploited both in cytogenetic analysis in wheat and in practical breeding work. The nature of the meiotic synapsis of chromosome 2M/D with its partial homologues raises questions concerning the means by which chromosome 5B influences the specificity of meiotic synapsis.
Aneuhaploids in bread wheat

Euploid and aneuploid plants of Triticum aestivum, variety Chinese Spring were pollinated with, pollen of Hordeum bulbosum. Euhaploids and aneuhaploids of Chinese Spring were obtained from the crosses. Meiotic chromosome pairing was analysed in 25 different aneuhaploids and the results were compared with those obtained from euhaploids. The evidence provided by the meiotic studies was used to identify chromosomes whose activities affected the genetic control of chromosome pairing.
Meiosis was abnormal in a 23-chromosome aneuhaploid and in the 22-chromosome sectors of a chimaeral plant. Both plants were thought to have resulted from the incomplete elimination of the genome of H. bulbosum from hybrid embryos. It is suggested that the meiotic abnormalities in the two aneuhaploids were caused by the residual barley chromosomes.
The inheritance in wheat of crossability with rye

1. By the use of intervarietal chromosome substitution lines, the poor crossability with rye (S. cereale, 2n = 14) of the wheat (T. aestivum, 2n = 42) variety Hope was shown to be determined by chromosomes 5A and 5B. The genes Kr1 and Kr2, which are responsbile for poor crossability (Lein, 1943), are probably located on chromosomes 5B and 5A respectively.
2. Crossability is actively inhibited by the dominant alleles, Kr1 and Kr2, of Hope and is apparently not enhanced by the recessive alleles, kr1 and kr2, of the readily crossable variety Chinese Spring.
3. The inhibition of crossability with rye conferred evolutionary and agricultural advantage upon wheat by preventing the production of sterile wheat-rye hybrids which could be regarded as weeds generated from within the crop.

1. The diploid species Secale cereale (2n= 14) is self-incompatible, Aegilops longissima (2n = 14) and A. caudata (2n = 14) are self-compatible. A. longissitna is usually self-pollinated and A. caudata is usually out-pollinated.
2. Meiotic behaviour, constancy of chromosome number and seed fertility have been examined in the three octoploid amphidiploids derived from crosses of Triticum vulgare variety Holdfast (2n = 42) with S. cereale A. longissima and A. caudata respectively.
3. All the amphidiploids had cells in which some chromosomes were unpaired at first metaphase of meiosis. This meiotic irregularity is not, therefore, related to the breeding system of the diploid parent.
4. The fertility of the amphidiploids was not related to their meiotic regularity.
5. The least fertile amphidiploid was derived from the self-incompatible diploid S. cereale. The most fertile amphidiploid was derived from the selfcompatible, self-pollinating diploid, A. longissima.
6. It is suggested that the infertility of the wheatrye amphidiploid may result from interactions between genotypes adapted to different breeding systems, rather than from the homozygosity in the amphidiploid of deleterious recessive genes derived from the outbreeding rye parent.
7. The demonstration of the independence of meiotic regularity and fertility will complicate selection work on wheat-rye amphidiploid material.

The WGNEO, a Working Group of Divisions I and III, was formed in the early 1990s to coordinate study of Earth-approaching asteroids and comets (NEOs) and provide timely advice to the General Secretary and officers of the IAU on discovery of any objects that threaten collision with the Earth. Since then, the WGNEO has steadily grown, reflecting increasing international interest and concern over impacts, especially from asteroids (which dominate over comets in their risk to Earth). In this triennium, the WGNEO had a membership of 49 (including the Organizing Committee of 17 members), plus 10 consultants. The Chair is David Morrison (USA), Vice-Chair Andrea Milani (Italy), Secretary Richard Binzel (USA), and Past-Chair Andrea Carusi (Italy).
